Roots
“Our adult world has its roots in infancy”
Carlo, born in 1937, is my grand uncle, at the end of World War II, Italy was split and devastated, therefore, after a friend's invitation he moved to Biel, Switzerland. There, he worked for almost 8 years at General Motors Co. to finally save money and moved back to build his home. Nowadays, he lives in a small village in northern Italy, in the same house, which he has built in the mid 1960s.
Oliva decided to remain in Italy, working for a knives factory and Liana (my grand-mother) emigrated to Argentina in 1946…
Carlo and his parents shared the new house until they passed away. He never married.
During summers, Liana used to flight from Buenos Aires to Friuli and they gather together to remember old times, they speaked about childhood, food, religion and politics.
Nowadays, Carlo is on his own…
her sister Oliva passed away in late 2017 and
my grandmother died at 93 years old in summer 2021, in Argentina.
This is a personal project about my roots, from where I came from as an important topic to dig deeper and to understand certain comportements to look ahead to the future with more mental clarity.
Map of Sacile with family names (ca.1890)
“The Michelin were two soldiers, militaries, frenchmen, employed by Napoleon, so, when they came to fight in this area, these two brothers abandoned [the army] and stopped in Caneva, here at 6 o 7 kilometers away. The two brothers married two sisters from Caneva, and from there, the Michelins started, here in our area, this is the tale that this professor from Vittorio Veneto found”
Voice of Mario MICHELIN (19** - 2021)
Giuseppe MICHELIN arrived in Argentina, with Campana transatlantic, on May 19th 1949 with only 24 years…
My grandmother arrived a year later above Conte Biancamano. The one way trip lasted 28 days.
